How big is the problem?
Noise measurements show that PE teachers are exposed to an average of 90 dB(A) during a PE lesson, which is well above the threshold at which hearing protection must be provided. The law is clear:
- Above 80 dB(A): the employer must provide hearing protection.
- Above 85 dB(A): wearing hearing protection is compulsory.
Nevertheless, only 42% of subject teachers say they are aware that they are entitled to this. This is a cause for concern, as long-term exposure leads to:
- Hearing loss: 1 in 4 specialist teachers already has hearing damage.
- Tinnitus: 35% experience ringing in the ears, which is far higher than average.
- Other symptoms: headaches, difficulty concentrating, voice problems and mental fatigue.

- Sports halls with good acoustics have significantly lower noise levels.
- Sound-absorbing materials on walls and ceilings reduce reverberation time and sound reflections.
However, even in venues with good acoustics, the noise level remains high enough to make hearing protection necessary.
